Project Summary

CaseLabs‍‌‍‍‌ is an online platform specifically designed by an Australian professor to help medical students prepare for their exams. Our mission was to develop a digital tool for learning through which students can practice with real medical cases.

As students are enabled to get practice from realistic patient scenarios, the system is developed to verify their knowledge and clinical reasoning abilities. It merges a case library, user accounts, and an assessment system into one comprehensive educational solution.

Project Idea

The main idea was the development of a custom software solution to supersede the old methods of learning. The key goal was to create an up-to-date and student-friendly interface and devise a flexible system through which professors can not only compose but also administer the case-based exams. The platform not only had to stage a medical consultation accurately, but it also had to provide the final diagnosis.

Having said that, API integration was a very significant phase in the process, involving the client’s back-end developer and our team, to make the functions smooth and seamless. Also, it was equally important to ensure the product’s capacity to expand as a subscription-based service for the ‍‌‍‍‌future.

Solution

We‍‌‍‍‌ built a minimal viable product (MVP) that works well and that can demonstrate the idea of the CaseLabs platform, which consists of the major parts. On the front-end, we used React.js to create a dynamic and intuitive interface for students. We worked closely with the client’s team to integrate the back-end API, ensuring fluid data flow and operational efficiency.

The platform sustains a step-by-step case analysis procedure for learners:

Case Catalog: From this section, students can browse and select available cases from the list to start their practice.
Intro: Setting the scene for the student begins with a description of the medical situation, before proceeding to a patient consultation.
Consultation: This section simulates a conversation with a patient.
Examine, Blood, Urine, & X-Ray: To gather more information about the clinic case, students can review medical data, such as blood and urine test results, physical examination findings, and interactive X-ray images with a zoom function.
Clinical Reasoning: To demonstrate clinical reasoning skills and complete the exam, students must answer a series of questions in this section.
Review: After the exam is done, students can review their results alongside a detailed breakdown of their performance.

Across the case, learners can utilize the embedded note-taking function to log their findings and logic, much like they would in an actual medical environment.

Result

With the launch of the CaseLabs MVP, the learning process of medical students was successfully transformed. Thus, it provided an effective tool for exam preparation, enhancing their clinical reasoning and better preparing them for real-life scenarios. The feedback on the modern design and interactive elements of the platform was great. Now this successful MVP is a very solid foundation for the future development of the platform into a full-scale SaaS product, ready for onboarding other educational institutions.
